While it isn’t my primary business, I publish a lot of content on the Web as part of my work. It’s a good way to reach people. For a long time, I was using Magcloud as my publisher of choice. I figured that it was free and it worked, so it was fine. Then a friend told me about Yumpu.com. It is a great little Magcloud alternatives that is just as free, but comes with a lot of new features. I haven’t even started using all of them yet, and I already see new possibilities in how they can change the way I publish my content.
Looking for Magcloud alternatives really changed the way I think about publishing.First of all, let me tell you about my experience with Magcloud. I found it basically by accident- I didn’t want to pay for a publisher, so I went with the first free one I found. It was fine. Magcloud doesn’t exactly have a lot of features, but I didn’t really need any. I was uploading something one day when a friend walked by and asked me if I had ever heard of Yumpu. Obviously, I hadn’t, so the friend told me to check it out as one of the better Magcloud alternatives. I figured that I didn’t really have anything to lose, so as long as this Yumpu was free I would look into it. It took me a while to finally get around to it, but after I explored Yumpu a little bit I was hooked.
It has a great array of tricks. For example, I found out how easy and useful it is to use Twitter to release your content. You can just make a tweet that links directly to the new stuff you uploaded. I think that’s pretty cool. If I had known that Magcloud alternatives had so many features, I would have started looking a long time ago.
Yumpu.com uses the ePaper format to present content. You just upload a PDF to the site and you get back an embeddable ePaper document. This is a format that looks almost like a book- the reader turns the pages by touching or clicking the corner, which is a lot more natural and better looking than the PDF by itself would be. All of the major search engines, including Google, index all of the content within an ePaper file, so if anyone goes looking for a key term for you, your ePaper will appear as a search result. This is obviously an important consideration for reaching new audiences. Coupled with the easy social media sharing, ePaper with Yumpu makes it easy to get your content to a wide audience. Yumpu really is the best of the Magcloud alternatives I have seen.
There’s also a lot of control over what you can do with the content. For example, you can add a video or some audio in with the text and images. I never thought about doing something like that before, but it is a really cool idea that has opened up a lot of doors for me, design-wise. It isn’t something that you can use all of the time, because it would get annoying, but it is perfect as a highlight or accent on particularly important work. I also like the ability to add hyperlinks and signup sheets. This is a great way for me to interact with my audience. Yumpu handles all of this seamlessly, and they have a great support team who is willing to answer any questions you have or help you with any problems.
If you, too, are in the dark about Magcloud alternatives, give Yumpu a try. It really only takes a little bit of time to get acquainted with the interface and start publishing, so it doesn’t cost much time to try it. It doesn’t cost any money, either. I find it hard to justify going back to Magcloud afters seeing what a good free option Yumpu was for me, so if you are using Magcloud right now, do yourself a favor and at least read about Yumpu.com. I think that you, too, will be surprised by the kinds of features you can get out of a free publisher. There are no downsides to trying it out once or twice, and if it means that you have found a better way to publish your content, so much the better.
More interesting stuff (Skype alternatives):
Video calling is a technological advancement that has made communication way easier for many people. In this way, you get to speak with a person from a hundred or so miles away through the Internet. What is better is that you also get to see that person, and vice versa, through streaming videos while your conversation is taking place. Video calling has not only made the original chatting services rather frail, it also bridges a lot of flaws in the world of online communication.
Skype is one of the video calling services that have become popular among many people in different countries. It is a software application that you can download and install in your computer. Essentially, you can make Skype-to-Skype calls for free and Skype-to-other-landlines for a bit of payment.
But since Skype has already too many users, it is just as prone to breaking down and crashing. This is why you must be aware of at least some of the alternatives that you can use should Skype be unavailable.
One of these alternatives is ooVoo. It is an application that allows for a maximum of six people who can chat with each other all at the same time. You can install this through any mobile device as well as in Mac and Windows computers. ooVoo also allows for video attachments that you can easily send to your contacts.
Another great alternative is the Google Voice. Of course, if it bears Google then it may be something great. With free calls via phone and video within the United States, it can really be said that Google Voice has a lot of benefits. The application allows for calls made between PCs for free. Google Voice also comes complete with voicemail, conference calls and transcription of voicemails.
Finally and especially for Mac users, you can consider installing FaceTime. This is actually a far-reaching application because there are so many users of Mac products everywhere. Therefore, video calling a friend who owns another Mac product is definitely made easier. With this you can do Mac-to-Mac calls and communication between your Mac to our iOS. The quality of the video is also rather high, with 720 pixels.
It is important that you find alternatives to Skype so that when it breaks down, you are not left hanging with no ability to call. Just make sure that you would get to use all features of the temporary plan without damaging anything.
