In this article I am going to give you a few tips on how to make a tutu. Tutus are skirts that you often see around a ballerina. They can be as fancy as a ballerina with a stiff material making them stand up firmly or they can be soft and flowing and an addition to any of your outfits.
To start with you will need to source your material. Tulle is the most common material used and can be found in most material or craft stores in your local area. If you are unable to find material where you live you can of course do a search on the internet and have the material delivered to you. Tulle comes in a variety of colors and styles which will allow you to make tutus of all shapes sizes and descriptions.

Your measurements are important and if you can get your hands on a basic pattern I would certainly consider using one. If you don’t have a pattern you will need to measure around the widest part of the waist of the person you are making the tutu for as well as from the waist to the knee when your subject is at full stride. Whilst you don’t have to make your tutu that long it will give you an indication of where the material will finish when the subject is walking. Of course if your tutu is just an addition to a current outfit the last measure is not that important.
To make your tutu light and fluffy I always like to use three times the waist measurement in material. You can either tie your material around your chosen waist band or sew it together. Double or triple it up to give it the body and you can even layer the tutu down the legs as well.
Tie your waist band at the read and cover the knot with a bow if you use elastic or make sure you leave enough material to tie a nice bow if you chose to use a ribbon based band. There are as many ways to make your waist band as there are to make the actual tutu.
That was just a few short tips on how to make a tutu.
